However, a single student's death only affects atmosphere very slightly. A student's death affects "school atmosphere", which makes students more paranoid (they spot your behavior more quickly and from further away). There is punishment for killing a student, but it's subtle and is only noticable after killing many students. Anyone who plays the game hoping for a Hitman clone might not get exactly what they were expecting.(which could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your perspective). But, 2022, the Hitman-inspired mechanics only make up a fraction of the game's mechanics. In 2014, Yandere Sim was just Hitman with an anime skin. However, over the years, I gradually drifted away from Hitman game design.

Yandere Simulator definitely started out as an attempt to completely re-create Hitman with an anime art style. I'm happy that you had fun with the game! (Perhaps after all 1980s Mode bugs have been fixed, and the game is stable enough to leave it in one state for several weeks.) It will have to wait until a point in time when it would be acceptable to go for a period of multiple weeks without releasing an update.

If I don't update the game for a period of multiple weeks, people start saying "omg he abandoned the game!!!!1" so it's very difficult to find a good opportunity to refactor the scripts. However, making that type of change to the game at this point in time would require dozens of scripts to be adjusted or entirely re-written, which could take a few weeks.

The reason why I gave the students a series of booleans instead of building a proper "state machine" is because, at the beginning of development, I was mainly just using Unity as a movie studio to create footage for YouTube videos, and I didn't think that the code I was writing would be used for a significant length of time. It would have been better to make these states a single enum variable: public enum StudentState I recognize that I should have done it differently. (However, if a student has witnessed murder, they will run instead of walk, so they will change their clothing much faster than if they had not witnessed murder.) If a student is splashed with liquid and then witnesses murder on their way to change their clothing, both of those booleans will be true simultaneously, but MustChangeClothing is higher in priority, so the student will change their clothing before executing their "Fleeing" protocol.

If a student witnesses murder, "Fleeing" will be set to true. If a student is splashed with liquid, "MustChangeClothing" will be set to true. There are many situations where a character can only be in one state at a time (for example, a student cannot be Following and Distracting at the same time) but there are also many situations where a student can be in multiple states at the same time. For example, if a student has been instructed to follow the player, the "Following" boolean is set to true, and the game starts executing all of the code in the "if (Following = true)" block. There are "states" in a loose sense of the term.Įvery student has a series of booleans that can be true or false.
